When you are just starting out as a brewer, it is a pretty good idea to brew a couple batches of beer using malt extract.  I lets you see how that process of brewing works and has a nery low initial investment into brewing equipment.  Many people may already have all the equipment  they need for a great batch of home brewed beer.
